Publication History
The Wizard was created by Will Harr and Edd Ashe Jr. and first appeared in Top-Notch Comics #1, published by MLJ Magazines (the company that would later become Archie Comics) in December 1939.
In the comics, Blane Whitney, also known as the Wizard, is a wealthy and highly intelligent man who uses his resources and talents to fight crime. He is a master of science and invention and uses these skills to create various devices and strategies to help him in his mission.
The Wizard is also notable for being one of the first comic book characters to form a team of superheroes. The team, known as the Mighty Crusaders, included several other characters from MLJ Comics and was one of the earliest examples of a superhero team in comic books.
The Wizard appeared regularly in Top-Notch Comics and later in Pep Comics and other MLJ titles. MLJ eventually shifted its focus from superhero stories to teen humor comics, notably with the introduction of Archie Andrews in 1941, and characters like the Wizard were phased out.
Blaine, known as “”Wizard,”” suffered from a rare brain tumor in the cerebello-parietal region, responsible for intelligence. As a result, he experienced terrible headaches, nosebleeds, and occasional seizures. Despite his condition, Blaine was gifted with a unique power that awakened his brain in a way never seen before.
At first, he craved knowledge, consuming information with a voracious appetite. Then, his abilities began to manifest. Wizard developed an extraordinary photographic memory, allowing him to envision entire memories as if they were movies he could walk through and investigate.
As his power grew, Wizard discovered he could enter the minds of others to investigate and help them. Though strange and disorienting at first, he quickly gained control and began exploring other people’s pasts, gaining valuable insights into their lives and experiences.
Realizing the potential for good, Wizard embraced his abilities and dedicated himself to helping others. He used his power to delve into the minds of people in need, uncovering the roots of their problems and guiding them toward healing and resolution.
In some cases, Wizard’s investigations led him to uncover hidden dangers, such as criminals plotting nefarious deeds. Using the information he gathered, he worked to prevent these acts, often collaborating with law enforcement to ensure the safety of those at risk.
As he continued to explore the memories of others, Blaine, now known as Wizard, fully embraced his newfound purpose. He understood the risks associated with using his powers but believed in the greater good he could achieve. Wizard became a force for justice and compassion, utilizing his remarkable abilities to uncover the truth and protect those in need.
