Thirteen is a character from the Golden Age of Comics, created by Bernie Klein and Dick Wood. The character’s civilian identity is Harold Higgins. Thirteen made his first appearance in Daredevil Comics #3, published by Lev Gleason Publications in July 1941.
In the stories, Harold Higgins, also known as Thirteen, is considered the world’s unluckiest man. Everything around him seems to go wrong, causing accidents and misfortunes. However, he manages to turn his bad luck into a force for good, using it to foil criminals and their plans.
Thirteen was a humor character, offering comic relief in the midst of the more serious and dramatic superhero tales that were common during the era. His stories were marked by a series of improbable and chaotic events, with Thirteen often stumbling into solutions rather than consciously devising them.
Thirteen was a recurring character in Daredevil Comics, which ran for 134 issues from 1941 to 1956.
Thirteen, born under an auspicious celestial event, had always been blessed with incredible luck. No matter what he did, things always seemed to go his way. He was immune to illness and injury, and nothing could ever go wrong for him. However, Thirteen began to realize that his good fortune was not an unmitigated blessing.
His luck appeared to have a negative effect on those around him, causing them to suffer from bad luck and misfortune. This realization weighed heavily on his heart, as he watched his friends and family endure hardships due to his presence. Thirteen’s fractured personality was reflected in his mismatched eyes—one eye blue, the other green. His insanity manifested as an internal struggle between his desire to do good and the uncontrollable consequences of his powers. Desperate to find a balance, Thirteen began searching for a way to control or neutralize his luck, hoping to rekindle connections with the people he had left behind.
As Thirteen delved deeper into the mysteries surrounding his powers, he discovered that his luck was tied to the very celestial event that marked his birth. With this knowledge, he set out on a quest to learn how to manipulate his luck, guided by the belief that he could harness his abilities for good without inadvertently causing harm to those around him.
