Spitfire, whose real identity is Black Douglas, is a character from the Golden Age of Comic Books. He was created by Malcolm Kildale and made his debut in Spitfire Comics #1, published by Harvey Comics in 1941.
Black Douglas, also known as Spitfire, is a World War II fighter pilot who fights against the Axis powers. The character’s name is derived from the Supermarine Spitfire, a type of British fighter aircraft used during World War II.
Despite the popularity of World War II-themed comics during the early 1940s, Spitfire Comics only ran for two issues, both published in 1941. Consequently, Black Douglas’s appearances in comic books are limited.
Douglas Blackthorne, a proud Englishman and skilled sailor, always dreamed of exploring the New World and making a name for himself. However, fate had other plans. As his ship navigated the Caribbean, a group of ruthless pirates, notorious for their brutal attacks on merchant vessels, intercepted them. Despite being outnumbered, Douglas and his crew fought fiercely to protect their ship.
Outmatched, Douglas’ crew members fell one by one, leaving him as the last man standing. Captured and brought before the pirate captain, he was offered a choice: join the pirates or die. Douglas refused to betray his country and his principles, and the pirates marooned him on a deserted island.
As he explored the island, Douglas discovered a crystal-clear spring with peculiarly sweet and tangy water. Driven by thirst and hunger, he drank from the spring without hesitation. Overcome by a sudden wave of dizziness, he fell into a deep slumber that would last for centuries.
In the present day, Amelia, a young archaeologist, stumbled upon the island during her research expedition. She found Douglas, still asleep, and woke him from his long slumber. As he regained consciousness, he realized that the water from the spring had granted him immortality.
While on the island, Douglas and Amelia encountered a group of mercenaries, who had been hired to locate the Spring of Eternal Life. Faced with this new threat, Douglas discovered that his time on the island had also altered his lungs, allowing him to generate and control mysterious, highly flammable gas. He could use this gas to create smokescreens, knock people out, or even turn his breath into a flamethrower.
Together, Douglas and Amelia fought off the mercenaries, protecting the secrets of the island and forging a strong bond in the process. Determined to use his newfound powers for good, Douglas adopted the nickname “”Spitfire”” and set off with Amelia on a series of thrilling adventures, safeguarding the world from various threats.
