The Red Blazer is a superhero character that first appeared in Pocket Comics #1, released in August 1941 by Harvey Comics. The character was created by artist Al Avison.
Red Blazer is the superhero identity of Jack Dawson, who gains his superpowers after being exposed to astro-pyro radiation from an alien spaceship. Using these newfound powers, he decides to fight crime.
Harvey Comics was a comic book publisher active from the 1940s to the 1980s, known for popular characters like Casper the Friendly Ghost and Richie Rich. Pocket Comics was one of their publications, but it had a short run and was discontinued after a few issues.
Jack Dawson, a rural kid from the small town of Clearwater, was walking home one evening when he saw a UFO blazing through the sky, trailing a plume of fire and smoke. With a mixture of fear and curiosity, he watched as it crashed into a nearby field, expecting a deafening explosion. To his surprise, the spaceship barely made a sound as it landed on the ground.
Heart pounding, Jack approached the wreckage, unsure of what to do. The spaceship’s hatch creaked open, and a wounded alien stumbled out, its eyes filled with a mixture of fear and gratitude.
Suddenly, Jack felt a strange sensation in his head. The alien was telepathically communicating with him, desperately seeking his help. Overwhelmed by the alien’s plea, Jack reached out and touched the creature. As he did, he felt a flood of memories and emotions wash over him, granting him the ability to understand the alien’s language and thoughts, and feel its pain as if it were his own.
The alien implored Jack to enter the spaceship, explaining that it was the only way to save its life. Steeling his nerves, Jack crawled inside, and the spaceship shot up into the sky, disappearing into the atmosphere. As it ascended, Jack was bathed in the pyro-radiation of space. The intense energy overwhelmed him, and he lost consciousness.
When Jack woke up, he was amazed to find that he had developed a pyro aura of radiation around him. This unique energy was not quite flames, and not quite radiation, but something in between. He had become a being of pure energy, capable of controlling and manipulating the pyro-radiation at will.
Jack felt both uneasy and intrigued by his new powers. Unsure of their purpose, he grappled with the challenge of learning to control them in a world that could be both hostile and unpredictable. As he began to harness his abilities, he realized he could use them in a variety of ways, from small acts of kindness to defending his town from danger.
Accepting the responsibility that came with his newfound powers, Jack adopted the name “”Red Blazer.”” Aware that his life would never be the same, he cautiously set out to explore the possibilities and limitations of his abilities, while striving to maintain a balance between his ordinary life and the extraordinary challenges he would now face.
