Mister Midnite, also known as Neal Carruthers, is a Golden Age comic book character who first appeared in Silver Streak Comics #1, published in December 1939 by Lev Gleason Publications.
Mister Midnite is a crime-fighter and scientist who invents a time-controlling device known as the “”Time Key,”” which enables him to manipulate time to fight crime and solve mysteries. The Time Key allows him to stop time, travel through time, and even age or de-age objects and people. This unique power set makes him a formidable hero and an intriguing character during the Golden Age of comic books.
Silver Streak Comics was an anthology series that featured a variety of adventure, mystery, and superhero stories. Mister Midnite, as Neal Carruthers, was one of the many characters that appeared in the series, sharing the pages with other heroes like the original Daredevil, Silver Streak, and the Claw.
Mister Midnite’s adventures continued in several issues of Silver Streak Comics throughout the early 1940s.
Neal Carruthers was a wealthy young sportsman, his entire existence shrouded in mystery. He had made his fortune gambling, always seeming to make the right pick in every race. This uncanny ability to manipulate time was a family secret passed down through generations, a power tied to the mysterious light matrix.
But as Neal continued to use his powers, he began to question the nature of free will and destiny. His control over the light matrix granted him the power to alter timelines, but he started to realize that certain events seemed immune to his influence. One such event was a tragic family accident that had left a deep emotional scar on Neal.
No matter how many times he tried to change the outcome, he found himself unable to prevent the tragedy. This inability to save his loved ones caused him to grapple with the idea that destiny and free will might be intertwined, with some events beyond even his incredible powers.
Neal started to use his powers to help people with smaller problems that he could affect. He would subtly change the course of events to prevent accidents, reunite lost pets with their owners, or help someone find a misplaced item. These seemingly insignificant acts brought joy to the people he helped and gave him a sense of satisfaction.
One day, while traveling back in time to assist a stranger in need, Neal sensed something was amiss. He could feel the presence of another person who didn’t belong in that time. Before he could approach the mysterious figure, they vanished without a trace. This encounter left Neal with an uneasy feeling, and he knew he had to discover who that person was and what their intentions were before it was too late.
Determined to find answers, Neal began to investigate this new, unknown time traveler. He started to meticulously track down any clues he could find, hoping to uncover the identity of the stranger and understand their motives. As he delved deeper into the mystery, he discovered that there were others with abilities similar to his, and some of them had less than noble intentions.
Neal didn’t know what his responsibility was, but he knew he couldn’t turn away. Whether it was free will or destiny, he was determined to find out who this person was and what they were planning.
