Publication History
Misery was created by Harry Stein and Fred Kida, and he made his first appearance in Air Fighters Comics Vol. 1 #12, published by Hillman Periodicals in September 1943.
Originally a French inventor from 1738, he created artificial wings that allowed him to fly. However, after being deemed a witch and burned at the stake by those who witnessed his flight, he swore to live on and became known as Misery.
The first issue of “”Air Fighters Comics”” was released in November 1941, at the height of World War II, a time when aviation heroes were particularly popular. The series continued until its 22nd issue in 1945, at which point it was retitled to “”Airboy Comics”” and shifted focus slightly to follow the adventures of its most popular character, Airboy.
In the 1700s, Paul Duray was a renowned inventor from France, a man of great vision and creativity. He dedicated his life to pushing the boundaries of what was thought to be possible. Duray was particularly fascinated by the idea of flight, and after years of hard work, he succeeded in creating a pair of artificial wings that could lift a person into the air.
Excited by his success, Duray traveled to the cliffs near Calcutta, India, to test his invention. However, the locals who witnessed his flight were terrified by what they saw. They believed that he was practicing dark magic and accused him of being a devil. Despite his attempts to explain his invention, Duray was captured by the locals and sentenced to death.
As he was burned alive at the stake, Duray made a vow to seek revenge on those who had wronged him. His dying wish was granted by dark forces, transforming him into an immortal being with a bony body and a flaming skull-like head. This transformation came at a terrible cost: as Misery, Duray’s physical form was in constant agony.
For centuries, Misery lived in the shadows, his pain fueling his desire for vengeance. The suffering he experienced served as a constant reminder of the tragic consequences of his actions, making him even more dangerous. He emerged from the depths of the underworld to wreak havoc in present times, seeking to destroy the descendants of those who had accused him.
With every soul he took, his pain only intensified, thus igniting his thirst for more souls.
