Big Boy Malone was created by Cliff Campbell and George Storm, and he first appeared in Pep Comics #17, published by MLJ Magazines (the company that would later become Archie Comics) in July 1941.
In the comics, Big Boy Malone is depicted as a villain, often clashing with various superheroes, including Comet and Hangman.
MLJ Magazines was known for its superhero comics during the early 1940s, but the company shifted its focus to teen humor comics with the introduction and success of Archie Andrews in 1941. Many of their superhero and villain characters, including Big Boy Malone, were phased out as a result.
Big Boy Malone’s story began in the impoverished streets of the city, where he learned to survive through sheer cunning and determination. As a child, Malone witnessed his family fall victim to the city’s crime and corruption, and he swore to never let anyone control him again. Driven by a deep desire for power and autonomy, he turned to the criminal underworld to achieve his goals.
One fateful night, Malone crossed paths with a powerful crime boss who recognized the young man’s resourcefulness and audacity. Impressed by Malone’s tenacity, the crime boss took him under his wing, teaching him the inner workings of organized crime. Within the criminal organization, Malone displayed his strategic prowess and relentless ambition, quickly rising through the ranks and becoming the boss’s trusted right-hand man.
However, Malone’s thirst for power remained unquenched. When his boss was arrested, he seized the opportunity to rally the gang’s remnants and take the reins himself. With a combination of charisma and cunning, Malone transformed the disorganized group into a formidable criminal empire.
Now known as “”Big Boy”” Malone, he commanded fear and respect from his followers and enemies alike. But it wasn’t enough; he wanted to control the entire city. To achieve this, he began to devise a plan to bring the city’s most powerful figures to their knees, proving that nobody was untouchable.
During his quest for power, Malone stumbled upon Hangman, the brother of the city’s beloved superhero, Comet. With a common goal in mind, the two formed a temporary alliance, and Malone gained access to the powerful serum that had granted Comet his superpowers. However, Malone’s greed knew no bounds. He betrayed Hangman, seizing the serum for himself and leaving Hangman devastated by the loss of his brother.
Driven by his unquenchable thirst for power, Malone injected himself with the serum, granting him superhuman abilities. He became stronger, faster, and more durable than any ordinary human, amplifying his criminal genius to unprecedented heights.
Emboldened by his newfound powers, Malone adopted a fearsome persona as a supervillain, terrorizing the city like never before. With the power to rival Comet and the cunning of a criminal mastermind, Big Boy Malone posed a significant threat to the entire city, leaving the remaining heroes to face their most formidable adversary yet.
